The palette lives in the address: hex codes joined by hyphens
The URL: the palette hash, ?site= and ?scripts=0
Recolor (recolor.page) keeps the palette in its address, after the #, in the Coolors URL format: 2 to 10 hex codes without # joined by hyphens, as in recolor.page/#264653-2a9d8f-e9c46a-f4a261-e76f51. Coolors writes its palette links the same way, so swapping coolors.co/ for recolor.page/# opens a Coolors palette in Recolor. ?site= adds a page to load, and ?scripts=0 turns its scripts off.

| A page to load | ?site=https://stripe.com/ | Loads that page when the link opens |
| Scripts off | ?scripts=0 | Loads the page without its scripts |

The palette after the #
The hash is the palette, left to right: #264653-2a9d8f-e9c46a-f4a261-e76f51. Each color is a hex code without its #, 3 or 6 digits, and
there are 2 to 10 of them. Recolor writes them in lowercase with 6 digits, and reads the short
form too: #fff-000-c33 becomes #ffffff, #000000, #cc3333. A hash it cannot read, such as one with a single color or a 4-digit
code, is replaced by the palette on screen.
The address follows the palette as you work: Recolor rewrites the hash a moment after each change without adding a browser history entry, so Back still leaves the page. Undo and redo are Recolor's own, 100 steps deep. Editing the hash in the address bar loads that palette as one undo step.
Coolors links
A Coolors palette link carries the same hex codes the same way after the domain. Swap the domain and the palette opens in Recolor:
https://coolors.co/264653-2a9d8f-e9c46a-f4a261-e76f51
https://recolor.page/#264653-2a9d8f-e9c46a-f4a261-e76f51Recolor reads the last run of hyphen-joined hex codes in whatever follows the #, so pasting a whole Coolors
address after recolor.page/# works as well. That covers both forms Coolors uses: coolors.co/<codes> opens
its generator, and coolors.co/palette/<codes> its page about a palette. A Coolors link with more than
10 colors does not exist, since Coolors stops at 10 too (5 on its free plan, as its pricing
page said on October 8, 2026). What Coolors offers beyond the palette itself is on
the Coolors alternative page. The other way, the Export panel's Coolors tab gives the Coolors link
for the palette on screen; Export formats shows every format, and
turning a Coolors palette into code walks through a full round trip.
A page in the link: ?site= and ?scripts=0
?site= holds the address of a page to load when the link opens; ?scripts=0 loads it with its scripts off.
Recolor writes both into its own address as you load pages, so a reload brings back the same page, and the Export
panel's Link tab builds the whole link for you:
https://recolor.page/?site=https%3A%2F%2Fstripe.com%2F&scripts=0#264653-2a9d8f-e9c46a-f4a261-e76f51The page address is percent-encoded by the browser, which is why https:// appears as https%3A%2F%2F; typing
it unencoded works too. A sample or an uploaded file cannot be put in a link, since Recolor keeps no copy of a file:
a link made then carries the palette alone. How each source loads is on Loading a page.
What a link does not carry
Locks, overrides from Site colours, the Strength and Neutral tint sliders, and saved palettes are not in the URL. Locks and settings belong to the tab you work in; overrides belong to the page on screen and its analysis; saved palettes stay in the browser, up to 50. Whoever opens your link gets the palette and the page, with the default mapping of Strength, neutral tint and overrides.
Common questions
Can I open a Coolors palette in Recolor?
Yes. Replace coolors.co/ in its link with recolor.page/#, or paste the whole Coolors link after recolor.page/#.
Does Recolor accept 3-digit hex codes in the URL?
Yes. #fff-000-c33 reads as #ffffff, #000000, #cc3333. Codes with 4, 5, 7 or 8 digits, or with alpha, are not read.
Can a link hold more than 10 colors?
No. A palette has 2 to 10 colors; a hash with more or fewer is replaced by the palette on screen.
Are locked colors kept in a shared link?
No. The link carries the colors only; whoever opens it starts with every color unlocked.
Can a link open an uploaded HTML file?
No. Recolor keeps no copy of an uploaded file, so a link can only point at a page on a public address, through ?site=.
Does every palette change add a browser history entry?
No. The hash is rewritten in place, so the Back button leaves Recolor rather than stepping through palettes; use undo for that.
