Short answer: all 16 sites tested loaded and repainted, scripts on and off
Which sites load, and which do not
Recolor (recolor.page) works with sites built on Webflow, Shopify, WordPress, Squarespace, Framer and Wix: on October 8, 2026 all 16 sites in its test loaded with scripts on and off and took the palette. How much of a page changes depends on how much of its color lives in CSS rather than in photos, video or canvas.

Webflow, Shopify, WordPress, Squarespace, Framer and Wix
The builder behind a site matters less than what it sends: HTML and CSS. Every platform in the test produced pages Recolor could read and repaint. Webflow: finsweet.com (98%) and webflow.com (87%) of the elements changed color under the default palette. WordPress: wordpress.org/news (27%), a dark page with few colors. Shopify: www.allbirds.com (29%), a store whose look comes mostly from photos. Squarespace: www.squarespace.com (9%), a photo hero with black and white type. Framer: www.framer.com (31%). Wix: www.wix.com (7%), a white page whose soft gradient is an image.
A low share is not a failure: it means the page has little color in CSS. Images, video, canvas and WebGL keep their colors, as How Recolor repaints a page explains. The Grey images switch shows them in grey so the palette reads on its own. To try a page that is not public yet, upload its HTML, as Loading a page describes.
What happened on each site
Every site was loaded twice, with the page's scripts on and off. With scripts off, no computed color on any site moved by more than 0.02 in OKLab when the engine rewrote the page, which is too little to see. With scripts on, four sites restyle themselves while they load (github.com, webflow.com, www.allbirds.com and www.squarespace.com), so the same check could not come out exact for them; their pages still looked right.
| Site | With scripts on | What the palette does |
|---|---|---|
| tailwindcss.com | Nothing seen | Code samples, links and accents take the palette; greys take a tint |
| stripe.com | One image preload refused by the sandbox; the WebGL hero falls back to its picture | Brand buttons and links take swatch 1 and stay readable; the WebGL hero keeps its colors |
| news.ycombinator.com | Nothing seen | The orange bar takes swatch 1, kept light enough for its black text; the Y logo is an image |
| developer.mozilla.org | 5 module scripts cannot load in the sandbox, so a slot filled by script stays empty | A dark theme, mostly grey; links stay readable on the dark ground |
| astro.build | 5 module scripts cannot load; interactive parts are inert | Accents and gradients take the palette; the purple hero glow is an image |
| vite.dev | 7 module scripts cannot load, so the hero diagram drawn by script stays empty | A dark page, almost all grey; the banner and the button border are images |
| en.wikipedia.org | Nothing seen | Links, radios and the contents box take swatch 1 and stay readable |
| github.com | A script throws on the sandbox's missing origin; the header restyles itself after load | The green sign-up button takes a swatch, darkened for its white text; 28,104 declarations |
| www.shopify.com | One script error; nothing visible | Near-black text stays grey, dark sections take a tint; the hero is a video |
| finsweet.com | An analytics beacon and a cross-frame read fail; nothing visible | The lime brand buttons take swatch 1 but stay light, so their black text still reads |
| webflow.com | One stylesheet added by script is read element by element; its interactions restyle the page as it loads | The blue banner and buttons take swatch 1; the rest is black, white and grey |
| wordpress.org/news | Nothing visible | A dark navy page: the button and links take the palette, the rest stays grey |
| www.allbirds.com | Script errors and blocked requests; its scripts restyle the page as it loads | Photo-led: the color tiles and bars take the palette, the photos keep theirs |
| www.squarespace.com | 132 script errors in the sandbox; the header swaps black and white as it loads | A photo hero and black and white type: little color to change |
| www.framer.com | 10 requests refused by the sandbox; nothing visible | A black page: links and accents take the palette; the glowing hero is drawn by script |
| www.wix.com | 11 script errors in the sandbox; nothing visible | White with a soft gradient that is an image: few elements carry color |
Why a site does not load
A site may refuse the request. Some answer anything that is not a full browser, or Cloudflare's network, with an error: during testing in October 2026, w3.org answered Recolor's fetcher with 403, and news.ycombinator.com now and then answers with 419. The card then says the site refused and gives the status; saving the page and uploading it is the way around.
Other reasons are Recolor's own limits: more than 5 MB of HTML, no answer within 10 seconds, an address on a local or private network, a page behind a login, or a file that is not HTML. Each has its own message, listed on Loading a page, and the numbers are on Limits.
Why a page loads but looks different
The preview is a sandboxed frame with no origin of its own, which keeps the page's scripts away from Recolor and from you. Most pages do not mind. Some do:
- Module scripts from another domain need permission (CORS) that a frame without an origin does not get, so they do not run. On developer.mozilla.org, astro.build and vite.dev this left parts drawn by script empty.
- Scripts that build addresses from the page's origin can throw, since the origin is "null". GitHub's did, with nothing visible as a result.
- Pages built entirely in the browser need their scripts; with scripts off they may show little.
The Scripts switch is the lever: off shows the HTML and CSS the server sent, which often carries the colors well. Nothing a page's script does reaches the site, its owner or your accounts; What Recolor stores and fetches covers the sandbox.
How the test is run
The matrix runs in headless Chrome against Recolor's development server. For every site and both Scripts settings it records the time from opening the app to the engine's report, the engine's own reading time, the colors found, the share of elements a palette changes, and a fidelity check that compares every element's computed colors before and right after the engine's rewrite. Screenshots in the page's own colors and in three palettes are looked at by eye. The engine read the largest page, github.com with 28,104 declarations, in 337 ms.
Common questions
Does Recolor work with Webflow sites?
Yes. finsweet.com and webflow.com, both built in Webflow, loaded and repainted on October 8, 2026, with scripts on and off.
Does Recolor work with Shopify stores?
Yes. www.allbirds.com, a Shopify store, loaded and repainted. Product photos keep their colors, so the share that changes is lower than on a page of flat color.
Does Recolor work with WordPress sites?
Yes. wordpress.org/news, which runs on WordPress, loaded and repainted with scripts on and off.
Does Recolor work with Squarespace, Framer and Wix sites?
Yes. www.squarespace.com, www.framer.com and www.wix.com loaded and repainted; all three put much of their color in images, so less of the page changes.
Can Recolor load a single-page app built with React or Vue?
Yes, often, with scripts on. If its code comes as module scripts from another domain it cannot start in the sandbox; then the server's HTML with scripts off is the fallback.
Can a page's own scripts break the preview?
Yes, sometimes. A script can send the page elsewhere, and the card then says the page left the preview; Retry with scripts off loads it without them.
