Load the real site, press Space, check the pages that matter

Test a palette on your own site before a redesign

To test a color palette on your own website, load the site into Recolor (recolor.page) by its address, or upload a saved page when it runs on localhost or behind a login, then press Space through palettes while the real pages repaint. Check the hero, the buttons, the charts and the body text on each page that matters; when one palette holds up, share the link or export the colors.

Before you start

List the pages that decide whether a palette works: usually the home page, a product or pricing page, a long text page and whatever is busiest, such as a dashboard or a form. A palette that flatters the hero can fail in a table. Note your current brand color too; it is the color swatch 1 will replace, so you can judge each palette against it.

Loading each kind of site

  1. A public site: paste the address into the field at the top and press Enter. Links inside the preview load other pages of the site through Recolor, so you can walk the site in one palette.
  2. Localhost or a protected staging site: open the page in your browser, save it as HTML, and upload it with Upload. In the same panel set the asset base URL to an address where its images, styles and fonts can be fetched, such as the staging server or a public tunnel to your machine.
  3. A page that builds itself with JavaScript: leave Scripts on. If the preview stays empty, turn the Scripts switch off; if a script sends the page away, the card offers Retry with scripts off. Without scripts you see the HTML the server sent, which often carries the colors.

Every error message and its fix is on Loading a page, and Which sites load lists 16 real sites, from Webflow and WordPress to Shopify, tested both ways on October 8, 2026.

What to check on each palette

  • Text: body text on the background, links inside paragraphs, text on the hero and on colored sections. Recolor keeps text at least as readable as the page had it, but look anyway; keeping a palette accessible explains the limits.
  • Buttons and states: the main button, its hover color, secondary buttons, focus rings, disabled states.
  • Data: charts, badges, status colors and table stripes, which often use colors the brand palette did not plan.
  • Dark sections: footers and heroes keep their darkness under pale swatches; check they still feel like the brand.
  • Images next to the palette: photos and illustrations keep their colors. Turn on Grey images in the Mapping panel to judge the palette without them, then off again to see whether they still fit.

Comparing palettes

Press Space until something works, lock the colors you want to keep with L, and keep pressing for the rest. Undo goes back 100 steps, and Save current in the Saved palettes panel keeps up to 50 palettes in your browser for a side-by-side later. To show a palette to someone, the Link tab in Export gives a link that opens the same page in the same palette; it works for a page loaded by address, not for an uploaded file.

When one palette holds up

Export the colors in the format your site uses, as described in Export formats, and build them in with variables so the next change is cheap: How to recolor a website with CSS variables shows how. If you started from a palette in another tool, the preview guide covers moving it into Recolor first.

Common questions

Can I test a palette on a site running on localhost?

Yes, by upload. Recolor refuses local addresses, so save the page as HTML, upload it and set the asset base URL to where its files can be fetched.

Does testing a palette change my live site?

No. Recolor repaints a copy in your browser; your site, its files and its visitors are untouched.

Can I test more than one page of my site?

Yes. Click links inside the preview: on a site loaded by address they load the next page through Recolor in the same palette.

Can my team see the palette on our site?

Yes, for a site loaded by address: the Link tab in Export gives a link to the same page in the same palette.

Will it work with my site builder?

Yes, on the builders tested: Webflow, WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Framer and Wix sites all loaded and repainted on October 8, 2026.

Is testing a palette on my own site free?

Yes. Recolor is free and needs no account.
