Space generates, L locks, C copies, ? shows them all

Keyboard shortcuts

Recolor (recolor.page) has keyboard shortcuts for all of its palette work: Space generates a new palette, L locks and C copies the color under the pointer or in focus, Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z undoes, and Shift with an arrow moves a color. Press ? in the app for the same list. Space and undo also work while the previewed page has focus.

The palette

Space replaces every unlocked color with a new one; holding it down does not repeat. L locks or unlocks a color and C copies its hex code. Both act on the color you reached last, by pointer or by keyboard focus, so you can hover over a swatch and press L without clicking it. Locked colors survive Space and keep their place.

Cmd+Z undoes on a Mac and Ctrl+Z elsewhere; add Shift to redo. History keeps 100 steps: new palettes, edits, reordering and the overrides of Site colours. Locking and unlocking are not steps, so undoing a new palette never unlocks what you just locked. More on what the URL and history keep is in the URL format.

Moving between and moving colors

Tab reaches the palette strip; Left and Right then move the focus from color to color. Shift+Left and Shift+Right move the focused color itself one place, and the focus goes with it. Because swatch 1 takes the page's main color, moving a color to the front changes which part of the page it paints, as Strength, neutral tint and overrides explains.

Each color also has a drag handle. Focus it and press Space or Enter to pick the color up, move it with the arrows, and press Space or Enter again to drop it, or Esc to put it back. On a touch screen, or when a swatch is too narrow for its buttons, the menu on each swatch holds every action, Move left and Move right included.

The page and the panels

Enter in the address field loads the page, as Loading a page describes. Once a page is shown, clicking into it gives it the keyboard, and Recolor still hears Space and Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z: the engine inside the page passes them on. A text field on the page keeps its keys, and a page button you reached with Tab keeps Space for itself, as it would on the site.

In an open menu Up and Down move, and in the Export panel Left and Right move between the format tabs. Esc closes the menu, panel or dialog that opened last and gives the focus back to the button that opened it. ? opens the list of shortcuts. The panels themselves are described in Export formats and How Recolor repaints a page.

When a shortcut does nothing

Shortcuts wait while you type: in the address field, the hex field of Adjust or the asset base URL, Space types a space and Cmd+Z undoes your typing. They also wait while a menu, panel or dialog has the focus, and during a drag. A button you reached with the keyboard keeps Space, because Space presses buttons; one you clicked gives it back, so clicking Undo and then pressing Space generates as expected.

Common questions

Does Space work while the page in the preview has focus?

Yes. The engine inside the page passes Space and the undo keys to Recolor, unless you are typing in one of the page's fields.

Can I lock a color without clicking its lock?

Yes. Point at the color, or give it the focus with Tab and the arrows, and press L. Press it again to unlock.

Can I reorder colors without a mouse?

Yes. Focus a color and press Shift with Left or Right, or use its drag handle with Space, the arrows and Space again.

Is there a shortcut to save a palette?

No. Saving is the Save current button in the Saved palettes panel; the palette is also always in the URL.

Do the shortcuts differ between Mac and Windows?

Yes, only for undo and redo: Cmd+Z and Shift+Cmd+Z on a Mac, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z elsewhere. The rest are the same.

Can I change the shortcuts?

No. The keys are fixed; the ? key shows them in the app.
